Akron Cold Case Fugitive Wanted Since 2013 Arrested by U.S. Marshals in New Orleans
New Orleans, LA – Late this morning, members of the United States Marshals Service (USMS) in New Orleans, Louisiana arrested Shawn Brooks, 37. Brooks has been on the run from law enforcement since 2013.
In 2013 a warrant was issued for Brooks from the Broward County Sheriff’s Office for 15 counts of sexually related offenses, involving minors.
Members of the Northern Ohio Violent Fugitive Task Force (NOVFTF) began investigating where Brooks was hiding. Not only was Brooks wanted by Broward County in Florida, but he was also wanted by the Summit County Sheriff’s Office for warrants issued in 2015 for pandering sexually oriented material involving a minor, importuning, and disseminating material harmful to a juvenile, 11 counts in total. The fugitive case proved difficult as Brooks had stolen identities over the years while on the run.
The case eventually led investigators here in Ohio to Louisiana as a possible location where Brooks was hiding with his girlfriend. Earlier today, members of the USMS in Louisiana were able to locate Brooks in a home in the 800 block of 3rd St. in New Orleans. While officers attempted to arrest him, Brooks barricaded himself in the home and then crawled into a neighbor’s attic in an attempt to evade arrest. Brooks was eventually taken into custody and was booked into the Orleans Parish Sheriff’s Office. Where he will remain until he can be extradited to the locations where he faces charges.
U.S. Marshal Pete Elliott stated, “Our teams will never stop looking for violent fugitives, no matter how long they are on the run. Anyone who hurts a child will be at the top of our list”
