US-Mexico Take Action to Combat Illicit Fentanyl, Disrupt Arms Trafficking, Manage Migration
In a significant meeting on July 24, President Andrés Manuel López Obrador of Mexico and senior government officials hosted a U.S. delegation led by Homeland Security Advisor Dr. Elizabeth Sherwood-Randall, Deputy Attorney General Lisa O. Monaco, Acting Deputy Secretary of Homeland Security Kristie Canegallo, and Deputy Secretary of State for Management and Resources Rich Verma. Addressing firearms trafficking, which contributes to violence and destruction on both sides of the border, was also a key topic of discussion. The two nations underscored the importance of discovering, disrupting, and dismantling firearms trafficking networks to support their efforts against illicit fentanyl.
Regarding regional migration, the leaders acknowledged the challenges and progress made in cooperation. They committed to forging a region-wide response, guided by the principles outlined in the Los Angeles Declaration on Migration and Protection. Both countries agreed to expand legal pathways for migration throughout the region, including to Mexico and the United States. Additionally, they discussed enhancing joint development efforts in Central America while maintaining strong consequences for irregular entry at the shared border.
Lastly, the United States and Mexico reaffirmed their commitment to modernizing and advancing infrastructure projects that benefit their border communities and strengthen the bilateral relationship and security between the two nations.
