National Capitol Classic golf fundraiser co-hosted with SAIC and Amazon Web Services celebrates our veterans at the historic Army Navy Country Club WASHINGTON, May 7, 2025 /PRNewswire/ -- Building Homes for Heroes, joined by its partners Science Applications International Corp. (NASDAQ: SAIC) and Amazon Web Services, announced today it will pay off the remaining mortgage for the family of Sergeant Major Anders Johansson, a highly decorated U.S. Army Special Forces soldier who tragically lost his life in a vehicle accident on December 26, 2024. As the family copes with this unfathomable tragedy, the mortgage payoff will provide critical financial stability for his wife Sarah and their four children, including their 16-year-old son who sustained critical injuries in the accident. The announcement came during Monday's inaugural National Capital Classic golf fundraiser for Building Homes for Heroes. Co-sponsored by SAIC and AWS at the Army Navy Country Club, more than $300,000 was raised so that Building Homes for Heroes can continue providing mortgage-free homes and further life-changing support to injured veterans, Gold Star families and first responders. Their shared commitment to supporting veterans and their families ensures the Johansson family can remain in their Vass, North Carolina home without the burden of mortgage payments as they navigate this profound and sudden loss. "Sergeant Major Johansson devoted nearly 22 years to protecting our nation with exceptional dedication and courage," said Andy Pujol, founder and CEO of Building Homes for Heroes. "While we can never repay what he and his family have sacrificed, we can honor his legacy by ensuring his family has the stability of a mortgage-free home. This mission exemplifies the power of our partnerships with organizations like SAIC and AWS, whose unwavering support makes these life-changing moments possible." "SAIC is honored to recognize Sergeant Major Johansson's dedication to our nation and provide our support to his family through our partnership with Building Homes for Heroes," said SAIC CEO Toni Townes-Whitley. "We are deeply privileged to stand alongside Building Homes for Heroes in remembrance of Sergeant Major Johansson and his remarkable service to our country. This represents our ongoing commitment to those who have sacrificed so much for our nation and our heartfelt support to his family." said Shannon Judd, Director, Amazon. In his distinguished military career, Sergeant Major Johansson earned multiple awards and commendations, including the Silver Star, Legion of Merit, eight Bronze Stars, a Purple Heart, and numerous campaign medals from his service in Iraq and Afghanistan. Beyond his military service, he was deeply committed to his local community, working with youth groups, supporting his local church, and regularly donating to help disadvantaged children. "Anders was everything to our family—a loving husband, devoted father, and our foundation," said Sarah Johansson. "With Building Homes for Heroes' support, I can continue raising our children in the community we've called home, focusing on helping them heal and grow while supporting our son through his recovery. This gift means we can face our future without the added burden of financial uncertainty." The announcement was the culmination of a day of celebration of our nation's heroes, as several patriotic corporations, hundreds of supporters and dozens of veterans were on hand for the golf outing to raise awareness and support for Building Homes for Heroes' mission of building better and brighter lives for our nation's heroes. The organization has high aspirations to construct, gift and modify as many as 50 homes in 2025, while helping as many as 5,000 veterans, first responders and their family members through all of its programs, and accomplishing its milestone 500th home gift before the end of 2026.
